HOW TO GAIN ADMISSION INTO NIGERIA UNIVERSITIES IN 2025
Gaining admission into universities seems to be one of the toughest challenges students face in Nigeria, and this is mostly due to ignorance. Many students are unaware of the certain steps and procedures to follow when seeking admission into their chosen higher institution.
In this article, I will review the series of steps and requirements involved in gaining admission into Nigerian universities. These include:
- Meet the Basic Requirements
Most universities in Nigeria require candidates to be at least 16 years old. For instance, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, specifies that no person under 16 may be admitted. Additionally, it is compulsory for every candidate to obtain a minimum of 5 credit passes in subjects, including English language and Mathematics, achieved in not more than two sittings.
- Register for and Sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
Many students make mistakes in their subject combination while registering for UTME (also known as JAMB), which affects their chance of gaining admission. Some are rejected, while others are given unfavorable courses to study. I advise you to ensure the required subject combination before registering for UTME. Furthermore, you must study well to meet the cut-off mark of your chosen university. Research shows that universities typically require higher scores than polytechnics and colleges of education.
- Apply for Post-UTME Screening
After the UTME, universities conduct their own screening exercises, known as Post-UTME. Your JAMB score gives you access to write Post-UTME, which will be used as a marker of your admission. (Passing JAMB is not enough; it is essential to pass Post-UTME to gain admission.) Some universities require you to write an exam as Post-UTME, while others calculate your scores in JAMB and O'level results together and divide it by a certain percentage. Moreover, visit the official website of your chosen university to register.
- Gather Credentials: Scan and save essential documents like your passport photograph, birth certificate, O'Level results, and JAMB results for online applications.
- Be Aware of Application Deadlines
Adhere to the timelines specified by each institution. For example, the University of Lagos had application forms available from February 26 to August 30, 2024, with submissions due by September 13, 2024. You can visit your chosen university's website to access more information.
By following all the points discussed in this article diligently, I am confident that you will be admitted into your preferred university in Nigeria.
